Dorset County Cup Final
Wimborne 22 - 0 Sherborne
Tries:- Luis, Sam Stroud,
Pat
Con:- Luis , Pat
Pen:- Pat
With the start delayed due to a missing referee, Wimborne kicked off. Both sides were keen to gain the upper hand but struggled to dominate in the early exchanges. The exchanges were fierce and following a breakdown where 'Big' Sam from Sherborne sat on Barney, we soon had to make a change. This spurred the team on. After a knock on just outside the Sherborne 22, Wimborne secured the ball from the resultant scrum. A simple pass to Luis enabled him to weave his way through the Sherborne backs and cut back inside to go in under the posts for the first try. Conv - Pat
With both sides still struggling to dominate Wimborne put together a good passage of play. A strong run by Harry resulted in two quick rucks led by George and Pat. A quick pass to Luis enabled him to take the ball into contact between the Sherborne 10 and 12 and to off load a well timed pass to Sam Stroud who was on hand to go over for the second try. Conv - Luis Half time 14 - 0
With the game still open Wimborne pushed Sherborne back into their 22. A good movement of the ball down the Wimborne backs resulted in Sherborne being penalised for a high tackle. The resultant penalty was taken quickly and with good handling skills between George, Sam Stroud and a well timed pass to Pat enabled him to go over for the third try. Conv - Missed
Sherborne knew they had to start to be a bit more adventurous to get back into the game. A clearance kick by Wimborne into touch just outside Sherborne's 22 allowed them to take a quick throw in. Quick thinking James Williams sensed an opportunity and intercepted their throw and sped to the try line only to be caught a yard short to what would have been a strong contender for try of the season. Wimborne continued to pressure Sherborne and recycled the ball. Sherborne's forwards defended the rucks well only to be penalised for being offside in the backs. Wimborne opted for a shot at goal to put the game out of reach. Pen - Pat.

Bridport 5 - 25
Wimborne
Tries: Ashton
Kerley, Samuel Heffer, George Gray (2), Harry Wright
Wimborne kicked off
on a pitch that had not fared well during the recent bad weather. After
several exchanges of play, Luis put up what appeared to be a bit of a
speculative kick in Bridport's 22. Recovering his own kick and tackled
a couple of yards from the try line he presented the ball back and first
to the ball was Ashton who picked up and went over for the opening score.
Bridport continued to pressure Wimborne and were awarded a penalty on
the half way line. Bridport took the ball quickly and Wimborne were penalised
again for not being 10 and playing the advantage Bridport moved the ball
down their line and were tackled into touch on our 22. With the lineout
lost Bridport moved the ball down their back line and we were adjudged
to have taken the ball into touch just inside our 5 yard line. At the
resulting line out Bridport stole the ball and went over for the try.
Half time 5-5
Wimborne made 10 changes at half time. Both sides couldn't dominate in the early exchanges of the second half. Bridport penalised on our 10 yard line for going over the top at a ruck enabled Sam Stroud to use the penalty kick to send us down to the Bridport 22 yard line. A clean take at the line out enabled Wimborne to pass the ball down the backs. Roddy cut back inside and with Mario in close support passed the ball to Sam Heffer who went over in the corner. A scrum on half way enabled Harry to pick up at No.8 and attack up the blind side. A well presented ruck enabled George to pick up and run hard up the 5 yard channel. Avoiding a couple of attempts to bring him down he went over for the third try. Wimborne now was starting to control the game and pushed Bridport back into their 22. The Bridport No.10 penalised for a foul play enabled Wimborne to set up a penalty move. The ball released from the wall enabled Harry to crash over for the fourth try. The restart was caught cleanly by Roddy. Tackled just short of the half way line popped the ball up to George who went half the length of the pitch to go in for the fifth try.
Final Score 5-25
Sunday 14th February
2010
Portsmouth 0 – 43 Wimborne
Wimborne started the
match with a long kick into Portsmouth’s 22. The ball was caught by the
Portsmouth No.10 who decided to run the ball out, however a slight mix
up with a teammate led to a penalty award to Wimborne for crossing. Quickly
taken, this caught Portsmouth off guard and enabled Pat to run in for
the first try. Conversion-missed.
From the restart Wimborne immediately returned to the Portsmouth half.
A Wimborne infringement at a ruck on the Portsmouth 22 led to a penalty.
Portsmouth tried to take the penalty quickly but Wimborne were penalised
for not being 10m. Portsmouth cleared their lines with a good kick to
touch just inside the 10 yard line. With the subsequent line out adjudged
not straight, Wimborne opted for a scrum. A clean strike enabled Pat to
pick and go up the blind. This quick thinking caught Portsmouth out and
enabled Pat to go in for the second try. Conversion-missed.
The re start again saw Wimborne return to the Portsmouth half. Continued
pressure by Wimborne kept Portsmouth camped in their half. A penalty awarded
to Wimborne 10 yards out allowed Wimborne to set up a penalty move. The
ball realised from the wall to Pat enabled him to crash over for the third
try. Conversion-missed.
A first half dominated by Wimborne and played entirely in the Portsmouth
half. Half time score 15-0
Portsmouth started
the second half. George collected the kick off and ran up the 5m channel
at pace and was tackled into touch just outside the opposition 22. Portsmouth
slightly stronger at the line out, won the ball and moved the ball favourably
down their back line. Caught in mid field, Wimborne re cycled the ball
and sent a cross field kick into the Portsmouth 22 which was knocked on.
Wimborne secured the scrum and allowed Pat to pick up and run in the fourth
try. Conversion-Adam.
It must be said that it was not by any means all one way traffic and Wimborne
had to work to secure the possession they wanted. Two good phases of play
down the far touch line released the Wimborne backs. Adam cut a nice line
to cut through the Portsmouth defence to go in under the posts for the
fifth try. Conversion-Sam Stroud.
With a couple of exchanges of possession Wimborne pushed Portsmouth back
into their half and an unforced error gave Portsmouth a scrum. Wimborne
with a more cohesive pack took the subsequent scrum against the head.
Wimborne passed the ball down the line to Sam Stroud who cut back inside
to score the sixth try. Conversion-Pat.
With only a few minutes left on the clock Wimborne continued to pressure
the Portsmouth defences. A concerted drive by the Wimborne forwards up
the far side 5m channel allowed George to go over for the seventh try.
Conversion-Luis. Final Score 43-0
A very convincing
away win.

Wimborne 17 - 14 Sherborne
Having
not played a competitive game since December 13th Wimborne welcomed Sherborne
to Leigh Park.
After several exchanges of play, Sherborne mounted a couple of strong passages
of play. The Sherborne backs were not able to capitalise on the good work
of their forwards, missing a couple of clear overlap opportunities. On Wimborne’s
next possession Luis sent a penetrating ball deep into the Sherborne half
which was knocked on. At the following scrum the ball was passed out to
Luis who went up the blind side. Initially caught, he was able to get the
ball away which was successful passed down the line to Roddy. From the resultant
maul the ball was recycled and just inside the opposition 22, Harry took
the ball on a determined run and evading several attempts to tackle him
crashed over for the first score. The conversion was missed.
Half time Wimborne 5 – Sherborne 0
With
several changes at half time, Wimborne started the better of the two sides.
A long kick into the Sherborne's 22, put the opposition under pressure.
Recycling the ball from the ruck Rowan picked up and drove the ball on.
James released quick ball to Luis to Peter P who cut a straight line for
the corner to score the second try. The conversion was missed. Following
the re start Wimborne produced two good passages of play. Successive rucks
got Wimborne to over the half way line. Quick ball released George at the
10 yard line. Running at the defence and with support out to his left he
threw a dummy pass and cut back inside to find a clear path to the try line
going in under the posts to the third try. James W was successful with the
conversion. Sherborne came back stronger after the re start and put Wimborne
under immediate pressure. A poor kick in our 22 allowed Sherborne to capitalise
and to pass the ball out along their back to score in the corner. Sherborne’s
No.9 struck a very impressive conversion. Sherborne continued to play the
better rugby and with a poorly contested ruck on Wimborne’s 10 yard line,
the Sherborne No. 5 was able to pick the ball up and run straight for the
try line to score. The Sherborne No.9 had no trouble with the conversion.

Lytchett Minster 0 - 0 Wimborne
It was windy and it was wet, very wet under foot but the sun shone as we made the short trip to Lytchett Minster. Playing conditions were difficult, the strong wind and slippery, muddy conditions making the game a battle of the forwards. Despite the efforts of both sides an opening could not be found and play for the most part taking place in mid-field with neither side looking like they would create that little bit of magic needed to break the deadlock. The forwards battled on into a stalemate. Wimborne nearly made the breakthrough deep in the second half, with Luis running free from the half-way, but he was caught just short.
Sunday 29th November
2009
County Cup Quarter Final
North Dorset 0 - 44 Wimborne
After an initial knock on from the kick off, Wimborne recovered the ball from the subsequent scrum and set up a driving maul into the opposition half. From the 10m line, Pat picked up the ball and went up the blind side as the gap opened in front of him. A determined run and avoiding several attempts to tackle him went over for the initial score. The conversion was missed. From the re start the kick went straight to George who caught the ball cleanly and set off on a forceful run. He continued his run to go under the posts for the second try. James Williams was successful with the conversion. With a couple of exchanges in possession, James Williams sent a probing kick towards the North Dorset corner forcing the defence to concede a 5m scrum. Patrick picked the ball and drove up the blind. Held up by the North Dorset defence the Wimborne forwards recycled the ball and release Ashton to drive over the line for the third try. The conversion was missed. North Dorset's re start kick went deep into the Wimborne 22, it was collected by James Williams who sent a long kick to the half way line. Roddy first to the ball carried for 10 yards before releasing Barney to go up the 5 yard channel for the fourth try. The conversion was missed. With Wimborne in possession the ball was carried to inside the North Dorset 22. The ball was re cycled from the base of the ruck. Peter sent a pass to Luis who ran at the fly half and inside centre. With a simple show and go, Luis cut inside to score under the posts for the fifth try. James Williams was successful with the conversion. Half time score: - 29-0
With Wimborne starting
the second half, the ball was retrieved just outside the oppositions 22.
Max released a pass to Luis who ran at the defence. A slip pass at the
right moment allowed Adam to go over in the far corner for the sixth try.
The conversion was missed. A determined North Dorset started to come back
into the game with a couple of passages of play and strong runs. From
a ruck on half way Harry picked up and drove up field to the 10m line.
Max re cycled the ball and cut inside off-loading to Chris to continue
the forward momentum. The subsequent maul didn't stop Chris as he came
out of it in possession and drove on again. Harry on hand picked up and
ran at the defence. The following pass released Luis who went over for
the seventh try. The conversion was missed. North Dorset continued to
show great spirit and again took the game to Wimborne. Probably North
Dorset's' best passage of possession was undone with a long kick to towards
their try line. Knocked on by the defender, Wimborne were awarded a 5
yard scrum. Picked up at the base of the scrum Pat released Mario who
drove forward. With the ball recycled quickly, the ball was released to
Luis who went over for his hat trick and Wimborne's eighth try. The conversion
was missed.

After plenty of overnight
rain and an early Sunday morning deluge, the pitch at Leigh Park resembled
a bit of a mud bath. Our match against new opponents kicked off as the
rain came down and the wind blew around the park.
Early on Portsmouth broke through, big forwards running straight through,
no one making a tackle. Conditions were not ideal but the lads started
to up their game trying to move the ball through the backs. Pressure paid
off, a kick from half way bounced around the Portsmouth try line, Wimborne
players gave chase making it difficult for the defender, who spilled the
ball, only for Luis to dive on it to equal the score. Luis also adding
the conversion. Wimborne were on top now and added to the score just before
half time. After successive lineouts, and a ruck quick ball found Luis
who found the a gap in the opposing centres to score under the posts.
Into the second half
and Portsmouth pressed from the off and made a breakthrough scoring a
try similar to their opening score, no one from Wimborne making a challenge.
Two points were added from the conversion. Wimborne seemed unable to get
going, struggling against the wind and conditions. Portsmouth pressed
again, their forwards running straight, making another break-through unchallenged
to score under the posts, and with the conversion the vistiors had a 7
point lead. This looked to shake up the guys, pressing with rucks and
mauls progressing up the pitch. After a series of lineouts a maul formed
just short of the try line, with Portsmouth on the back foot and a little
unsure on their try line, Luis took the opportunity to rip the ball from
the maul and sneaked a score. With two points the difference, the convsersion,
not at all straight forward and against the wind could be significant.
WIth a tremendous kick James William made the conversion count.
With a few minutes remaining, play centred on midfield with neither side
looking as though they would add to the score and so it ended all square
after a good contest.

"They say a week
is a long time in politics'.....well it seems it's a long time in a season
for Wimborne U13's. After a below par performance last week the lads reverted
to some kind of normality as they made the trip north to Sherborne. After
some rough weather the day was sunny with a stiff breeze.
The lads started well and pressed Sherborne with trademark strong rucking,
scrums and unlike the previous week, quick ball to the backs. Early on,
a break from Sean St Clair-Mulley nearly opened the scoring but he was
closed out. From a scrum shortly after, just on the Sherborne 22, with
the ball won and the Wimborne lads driving Sherborne back, Harry Wright
at no.8 saw the opportunity to pick and go. This surprised Sherborne who
could not prevent him running in to score the opening try. James Williams
converting in difficult conditions.
With the wind against us, the lads kept up the pressure, encamped in Sherborne's
half. The second score was not long in coming. From a period of rucking
and mauling, keeping the ball alive, Luis was on the receiving end of
quick ball and beat two defenders on the outside to score in the corner.
Into the second half
and straight from the kick off, Sherborne's receiver knocked on. From
the scrum, quick ball found Luis just inside the Sherborne half with space
to run into. Which he did and similar to his first half try he beat defenders
on the outside to score in the corner. The lads kept up the pressure,
not letting Sherborne out of their half. From a lineout the ball was secured
and George made a break from the half-way mark with several Sherborne
players in pursuit. The full back was lining up a challenge, however,
with nifty footwork George side-stepped him and ran in under the posts
to score, James Williams adding the conversion.
Towards the end of the match Sherborne scored their only try. From a Wimborne
lineout on the Sherborne 22, the throw was long and with the ball bouncing
around a Sherborne back grabbed the ball and ran the length of the pitch
to score a breakaway try. For the last few minutes Sherborne pressed but
strong tackling and defence kept them out, the final score Sherborne 5-24
Wimborne.
Well done to all,
it was an all round good performance.
The Coaches
Into the second half with the wind now against us. Play stagnated in the mid-field with neither side clicking or looking like making any further impression. As the half wore on New Milton scored their second try in at a corner. A missed conversion kept their lead to a slender 3 points. This jolt seemed to kick start the players and they began to press, much as they had in the first half. From mid-way Ashton made a decisive break, tackled just on the 22 the ball was re-cycled quickly with Harry Wright grabbing it and running out wide exploiting the open space and wouldn't be caught. James Williams again adding the conversion. With a good 5 minutes to go New Milton tried to press but could not penetrate into our half and the lads held out to win in unconvinving style, but a win is a win.
The Coaches

Congratulations to
the following U13 Wimborne players who sucessfully won thier way to the
regional finals of Prop Idol in November:
1st George Gray 2nd Pat Yeates 3rd Harry Wright
This event, which took place at Bournemouth RFC on Monday 19th October,
was geared towards forward body positioning in all the forms of play (scrum,
ruck and tackling) and included a skills and strength test at the end
of the session.
Sunday saw one of the longest away days this season with a trip to Newbury up the A34 in light drizzle. After a brief warm up on with the match, no drizzle at this point.
The lads started well with the forwards competing strongly although a few balls were lost to turnovers and rips. Newbury used this to good effect, moving the ball quickly through the backs, their winger using the open spaces to score the first try, at a time when Wimborne were getting on top. With the try converted, Wimborne carried on where they were interrupted and began to control the forward contest winning plenty of ball. After a brief spell of ruck, pick and go, ruck the ball came out to Luis mid-way in the Newbury half and with a turn of pace the defence were beaten on the out-side and up the wing he went to score in the corner. With the conversion missed, Newbury enjoyed a period on top winning turnovers in the ruck / maul they really shouldn't have. As with the first score the ball was moved out wide and again the winger used the open space to run in and score. The lads hit back, the forwards on top winning plenty of ball, making headway up the pitch. From one such breakdown, quick ball to Tate gave him the opportunity to make ground with a twisting run, off-load to Luis in support on the wing, cantering in to score his second try. After a fairly even first half Newbury 12-10 was the score.
With light drizzle ensuing, making handling a greasy ball difficult, the lads kicked off the second half with the wind behind them. They started with a flourish, continually strong in the ruck and scrum, with the maul work improving the possession was all Wimborne. Well executed pick and go's, contributed to by a number of forwards, made ground and gave Luis, leaving pursuers in his wake, the simplest of scores. By now the scrum was working well, winning most against the head, providing continued possession. From one Patrick, no.8, picked and went through defensive gaps. With work still to do Patrick stretched his legs and would not be caught, scoring under the posts, making the conversion straight-forward for Luis. The pressure continued, Newbury prevented from getting the ball and moving it out to their quick backs. The continued dominance paid off with another try. Rucking well and keeping forward momentum, George, just outside the 22, grasped quick ball and made a break out wide beating defenders with a deft turn of pace to score. Luis converted to give the lads a fair lead. As the half wore on , whether through tiredness or lack of concentration, Newbury were allowed more and more back into the game. Having realised their earlier successes were through the backs out wide, they reverted to their original game plan. Despite our best efforts we could not keep their backs out, allowing them to score two late tries. It was de ja vu all over again. The last conversion was the last play of the match leaving the final score Newbury 26-29 Wimborne.

Sunday
27th September 2009
Bournemouth
0 - 20 Wimborne
After last week's false start the lads made the short visit to local rivals Bournemouth. On a hot day more suitable for the beach than playing rugby it was great to see a good turnout of players. After a short warm up, although with the weather it wasn't really needed, our first real test at 15 a-side level commenced.
The early stages were fairly even, both sides trying to find each other out on this new adventure. As the half wore on Wimborne imposed themselves more and more and were on top, particularly in the forward battle, where the lads have been traditionally strong. The half looked as though it would end scoreless despite the continued pressure in the Bournemouth 22. However, the deadlock was broken just before half time following a pick and go at the back of a scrum, 5 metres out, Patrick opened the scoring.
The second
half continued as the first, Wimborne in control with pretty much all the
play in the Bournemouth half. Our strong forward play dominated the game
and gave precious little for Bournemouth and plenty for our backs. The second
try came after a period of sustained pressure, George Gray, having moved
from the forwards to the backs gained several metres before being grounded,
Sam Heffer picking up the pieces from the ensuing ruck, ran in the last
few metres to score. The pressure continued, the backs now moving the ball
around better, making use of the wide open spaces, driving runs from Tate
and Patrick lead to Patrick driving over for the third score, with two defenders
failing to stop him. The lads pressed on towards the end, the heat and now
nearly 40 mins of play seemingly not effecting them too much. To cap the
performance the backs produced some neat passing which ultimately gave Luis
the chance to run in and score the fourth and final try. Bournemouth 0-20
Wimborne.
There are plenty of things still to work on, including kicking as conversion
opportunities were missed. All in all a good start to a new era!
Well done
The coaches
A new start a new era in Youth, 15 a-side, full pitch, 20 mins each way…..errr no actually. What all were looking forward to as our first foray into 15 a-side rugby proved not to be as anticipated or we would have liked. Blandford couldn't muster a team so a game of 9's, 10 mins each way ensued. Blandford exploited the wider space and some missed tackles to take an early 10-0 lead. Having overcome the initial shock the lads dug in and struck back. First after an Ashton drive pressed on by James Williams, Peter was there to pick up the pieces just short of the line to score. The second after a long kick from defence caused Blandford to infringe just 5 metres out. The quick penalty was passed to Ashton who could not be stopped, equalling the scores at half time. In the second half and with wholesale changes the sides were evenly matched. However, missed tackles again proved to be our undoing with Blandford scoring two quick tries towards the end of the game, to win 20-10.
The game
of 9's followed with a mixed Blandford/Wimborne versus Wimborne match. The
lads definitely performed better in this format of the game, although the
hot day was effecting both sides. After early pressure Harry Wright scored
the first try steamrolling through from his position in the centres. Sam
Stroud scored the second running from just over half way, twisting through
the players, no one want to make a tackle. The lads relaxed for a second
after a knock-on, not playing to the whistle the mixed side get one back.
Luis then restored the two try gap after a pick and go from the back of
the scrum. Luis swerving his way through like a twisty swervy thing to score,
which ended the game 5-15 to Wimborne. Whilst overall an interesting start
to life in Youth it does show there was still a lot to learn and some basics
to get right.
