After the Saturday success of all three Senior sides the big game of the weekend was scheduled for a 12:30 k.o. Wimborne had failed to reach finals day since victory at Under 12s. The following three seasons involved total domination by North Dorset who also added the Dorset & Wilts Cup each year as well. Also worthy of note is their superb defensive record in this Cup where in the four seasons of competition they had conceded just one try which was in this years semi final. So in true cup fashion we were the 'underdogs' but felt we had a point to prove.

Both Teams arrived in plenty of time, the sun was shining, the pitch was perfect and the ref was advised to get his running shoes on! When kick off finally arrived, a large crowd had gathered and they were entertained to a superb display of rugby by both sides. The early exchanges took place in between both teams 22 metre line, an early break down the right wing saw QUINN put in space, the excellent covering tackle from the full back prevented an early score.

The Wimborne line out was failing to produce clean ball, North Dorsets forwards were able to infiltrate the ensuing mauls and quite early on Wimborne found themselves two tries down. The conversions were unsuccessful, kicking was to prove difficult for both teams all day. So 10 - 0 down, the Wimborne reply was not long coming, MAIDMENT broke in midfield and fed MARCH, MARCH took the ball on and timed his pass to perfection taking the contact from the full back but not before he had released QUINN into space down the right wing, QUINN took the right option and stayed out wide, outpacing the covering defence to dive over for an excellent try. The last score of the half saw MOYSEY convert a penalty, so at half time 10 - 8, the half time chat lead by 'El Capitano' HOLMAN was full of belief, we were looking dangerous with ball in hand, we had to work harder at the breakdowns and win our scrum and line out ball.

The 'whirlwind', 'rollercoaster' of a second half got underway, an early dropped ball by the North Dorset mid-field in their own 22 lead to FITCH getting his hands on the ball, beating defenders to the loose ball, he made right and finished well in the corner despite some despairing tackles. The lead didn't last long, North Dorset were to prove they were fighters and sure enough they scored a converted try. A short time later a drop goal from the ND No 10 and they had established a lead.

Sorry if the next twenty minutes is not in order but it was a 'tad' hectic. The Wimborne forwards stepped it up at the breakdowns, the 'Volcano' was about to erupt and introduce himself to four defenders. Taking the ball cleanly in his own 22 from a stray kick, the 'Volcano' set off, four hand offs later he was diving over in the left corner to the delight of the Wimborne following, a superb try, full of speed, skill and most of all determination. The score was now, .......... whatever................. I don't think anybody knew.

The crowd were going to see some more expansive play and the Wimborne backs were getting loads of ball from a resurgent Wimborne pack, FULLER and ASHMORE were making some breaks and the cover defence of COOK and MILSTEAD was disrupting any opposition ball. The handling in the backs was clinical, MOYSEY and COULTER were providing quick hands to FITCH and MARCH who were have a great time in mid-field. The defensive tackling of Wimborne was strong including a few MOYSEY big hits! MAIDMENT had a bit of trouble under the high ball but what he then brought to the game was awesome, one break saw him break from his own 22, beating defenders he crossed their 22m line and looked for support, first man there, prop forward LAWES! Superb effort after all that pushing and shoving stuff.

The tries to seal it were from MAIDMENT, firstly he broke through the defensive line which put the score at 28 - 20 to Wimborne. With minutes left and two scores clear, gathering the ball in our own 22 only one thing to do guys find the safety of touch, excellent decision applauded by the Coaching staff. Nah!!!!!!!!!!!!.........COULTER passes it out across the line into the hands of MAIDMENT, three side steps later and he is in under the posts, now it is done!

So now we move on to the Dorset and Wilts Final after a superb spectacle of rugby from both sides. Location and opposition to be notified.

Men of the Match: 'El Capitano' HOLMAN and all his 'merry men'
Special thanks: Dennis FRY, our forwards have come on leaps and bounds! Thanks from them and thanks from me!
Good to see : Rest of squad in the crowd including ARNAOUTI and thanks to all other travelling supporters.

Basingstoke 7 - 25 Wimborne

Both sides were glad of a 'run out' after the disruption of the weather, as it happens Basingstoke are blessed with loads of space and the pitch was in excellent condition. Thankfully a DVD kindly provided by the opposition was to provide some factual content to the following match report.

The game got underway and Wimborne were to enjoy plenty of ball, the return of HOLMAN saw a return of clean line out ball including on the opposition ball, however the final pass eluded the Wimborne backs. Both defences were strong and Wimborne were proving successful at the contact area but the points stalemate lasted for some time, the first points were through a MOYSEY penalty. Due to Wimborne dominance at the lineout through ASHMORE and FULLER, the home side elected to not contest and instead sought to invoke a penalty by not contesting the ensuing maul, strange tactics so early in the game but it worked and they gained a penalty.

A series of rucks took them to the line and their star performer on the day playing at 8 bundled over from close range. The next points were some time coming, the final pass was just failing to go to hand, MORRIS decided on a more direct approach and knocked the centre back in the tackle, this created a bit of space and after a deftly weighted kick from MOYSEY, FITCH gathered the bouncing ball and dived over. The half time whistle soon came with a slight lead to the visitors.

Wimborne rang the changes at half time but the line out dominance continued through RICHARDS and ASHMORE, even the scrums started to be turned over. The visitors eventually capitalised on the abundance of possession and MARCH began to enjoy some possession out wide, a couple of typical runs gained lots of ground and set up good, recycled ball. Following an excellently placed kick to the corner from COULTER, ASHMORE collected a loose line out ball and dived over, just reward for his impressive tackle count throughout the game.

The next try for the Wimborne side fell to MILSTEAD after a period of pressure, the flanker took the ball on from the back of a ruck and fought strongly for the line. The last of the points fell to the impressive FULLER who had provided a bit of go forward all day.

Man of the match: Craig Lawes

Sunday 21st February 2010
Wimborne 17 - 14 Bridport

Half term absences for both sides and torrential rain overnight but game on, it was always going to be difficult but both sides should be applauded for their ball skills with what ended up as a bar of soap.

The going can only be described as 'heavy' and after a series of inevitable 'knock ons' the Wimborne back line became increasingly frustrated at the final pass not making its target. Still an excellent day for scrum practice and the two Wimborne props of LAWES and COPLESTON were given an excellent test by their opposite numbers.

The tries were a long time coming and Wimborne opened their account with a break by MAIDMENT down the left flank, stepping back inside he bundled over. Bridport were competing well at the breakdown area and to their credit always stayed in touch. Following the half time interval, the pitch was holding up but conditions were not favouring the Wimborne running game. Bridport managed points of their own through their forwards, deserved points for their tenacity. Wimborne scored two further tries, though the match reporters glasses were covered in mud so they scorers remain unidentified but I am sure someone will claim them!

Man of the match: Will Chilvers (goes where angels fear to tread!)

Wimborne 19 - 6 Sherborne

Click here to see match photos

Another home fixture and the pitch looking in great condition. The Wimborne players have become very attached to their new shirts, they declined the offer of green and reversed their shirts to reveal an England strip! Not sure who had this ridiculous idea but it was inspired and will catch on big time! Keeps the players number anonymous from the referee too!

A capacity crowd had gathered still wondering how on earth Scotland had thrown away victory to the Welsh, from a personal point of view it just shows it ain't over until the ref blows the final whistle however deep into extra time it might be!

Some injury absences, ski trips and other very good excuses gave an opportunity to some who hadn't played for a little while due to 'Jack Frost' and Cup games.
The Wimborne pack settled into the game early on, particularly at the scrum where they provided clean ball for SCOBIE. The line out was not quite so organised! The Sherborne side had some new faces particularly within the forwards and they were to prove very strong in the tackle and contact area. Early possession for the Wimborne backs lead to some strong running from MAIDMENT who spurned an early chance when he used his 'driving iron' and not his 'pitching wedge' to chip the last line of defence.

The first score was after a strong run down the left wing by PAYNE, tackled by the last line of defence he made the ball available to MORRIS who was rewarded for his excellent support play and made for the try line. A well taken try and just desserts for the possession. Sherborne continued to look strong in the tackle and Wimborne became a bit guilty of becoming isolated as well as not supporting the ball carrier. This resulted in turnover ball or penalties on quite a few occasions. Half time approached and words of encouragement were offered, it was clear that the home side were kicking away too much possesion (must be something to do with the white shirts!) and we were being too greedy with ball in hand.

The second half required some strong tackling from Wimborne as the Sherborne forwards began to dominate, their No 10 was making good use of the ball and had it not been for the excellent tackling display they could well have found themselves in front. ASHMORE who was to later nominate himself 'Man of the Match' made a series of strong tackles. MAIDMENT sporting his new boots was re-introduced to the mid-field and the rest seemed to have focussed his mind, ball in hand he went off on two superb solo runs beating defenders to make sure we were always in front.
Sherborne scored by way of two well taken penalty kicks. On the whole a good performance against strong, physical, opposition but probably not our best display, we need to 'iron' out a few things and go back to working as a team?

Man of the match: ASHMORE
Best wishes to: Matt ARNAOUTI, get well soon Matt from everybody at Wimborne Under 16s
Good points: Tackling and defence is excellent so now lets get the attacking to the same high level

County Cup Semi Final

The much-awaited semi final arrived, victory against Bournemouth was likely to mean a final against reigning champions for the last three seasons North Dorset.

Most arrived in plenty of time, some didn't! The prolonged warm up didn't help the nerves but eventually we were underway.
Straight from the kick off Wimborne took it to the visitors, a series of runs by the pack saw BEST hit the contact, this tied in what was left of the visitors defensive line, the resulting quick ball saw SCOBIE dive over in the left corner, an excellent start and surely this would settle the nerves.

The Wimborne scrum looked solid in the early stages, Captain HOLMAN took an early strike against the head, quick hands and excellent support play saw the ball into the hands of MAIDMENT, a mazy 50 metre run in to the posts and two tries up plus a conversion. The home crowd wanted more of the same but it was a long time coming, Bournemouth were providing stiff resistance and were enjoying life at 'ruck time', their intentions were clear prevent quick ball and hit Wimborne around the fringes. Using some of their big forwards from the base of the breakdowns they made some ground but the Wimborne tackling and defensive line was excellent.

The last score of the first half saw COOK take the ball from the breakdown and crash over the line. Half time and 17-0, the game needed an injection of excitement, the large crowd were becoming frustrated, it was clear that nerves were playing a part and the final pass was just not going to hand.

The second half got underway, Bournemouth enjoyed some possession after a series of needless penalties, they were unlucky not to score but the Wimborne defence held firm. Eventually Wimborne moved up field, a scrum near the line saw ASHMORE pick and drive, he dived over, surely we were going to see some excitement now.
Unfortunately the penalty count against the home side was interrupting the flow of the game, the backs were guilty of encroaching on the offside line far too frequently, some of the forwards were also racking up the infringements at the breakdown area. The excitement of the game came when the ball went to the right wing and into the hands of MARCH, the winger suffering from an ear infection overnight was deadly, he finished off two chances, taking on defenders with speed, evasion and strength. The second of his tries was the best of the game, capped off with successful conversions the score stood at 38-0.

More points would have been scored had some backs who will remain nameless have trusted the support runners outside, taken defenders on the outside when appropriate and been more clinical with their passing. Much to reflect on but lets not beat ourselves up, playing below par and winning by such a score with no points conceded!
Enjoy the victory and lets get ready for the final, which I understand will be on March 7th at Bournemouth against North Dorset.

Man of the match: SCOBIE, excellent defensive display and some lovely running in open play.
Almost best dressed man: LAWES minus his 'winkle pickers' which I understand are broken!

Sunday 24th January 2010
Dorchester 21 - 19 Wimborne

After 'Jack Frost' had finished his attempts to ruin the rugby season, we travelled off to Dorchester again, this was to be the third match against them this season and it was to prove one too many for the visitors. Still any rugby is good rugby and as ever it was to be ferocious battle with the usual banter up and down the touch line, as well as on it! T

he Dorchester game plan was evident early on, try to disrupt quick ball to the Wimborne backs, MOYSEY playing at 9 was the target and he took some hefty challenges, some would say a 'tad' late and some would say 'not.' The Wimborne forwards were competing well at the breakdown, the scrum was sound and LAWES was to enjoy the 'rumble in the jungle' and crashed over from close to the line.

The second score was an excellent backs move which saw the side stepping dancing feet of MAIDMENT break through mid-field and run one in under the posts. An excellent start and more to come when a third try was scored, though the match reporter missed the scorer, either MORRIS, MARCH or someone else beginning with 'M'. The first half was finished off with a penalty kick by the 'Dorchester 10, Max' who was to prove to be the 'match winner'.

The second half got underway, Wimborne were getting heavily penalised for all sorts of infringements particularly at the breakdown area and the excellent tactical kicking of 'Max'. caused the visitors problems on the flanks. One such kick to the right wing caused a defensive mix-up and the resultant contact saw a Dorchester score. Game on and the penalties were still coming fast and furious. 'Max' scored another fine penalty and the visitors were clearly up against it.

Dorchester had the desire for victory and Wimborne clearly lost discipline which was to cost them the game, a late tackle in mid-field and back chat to the referee and Wimborne lost one to the 'sin bin.'
Dorchester took their chances well and another try saw them edge into the lead, Wimborne have hopefully learnt a huge lesson today, 'discipline must be maintained', however the circumstances may seem to you! it cost us the game! Now lets move on!

Man of the Match: 'Max' the Dorchester 'ten!'

Happy days will follow!

The much awaited quarter final tie finally arrived, on arrival the flags were being put out onto 'Pitch No 2', memories of two years ago sprang to mind when we lost 8 - 7 in a cup match on that very pitch. The travellers have been threatening to 'cut loose' all season and unfortunately Swans were the unfortunate recipients of the best thirty five minutes of rugby that we have played all season. Prior to kick off there was an air of confidence amongst the travelleres and you could tell that the players were determined that there would be no repeat of the performance two seasons ago, even Vice Captain MORRIS turned up in a shirt and tie!

Before kick off the warm up looked sharp, particularly amongst the forwards, directed by the honourable Dennis FRY. The line outs were looking sharp and orders were clear, nullify Swans at the ruck area, compete for everything at the break down, provide quick ball to MOYSEY and follow the rest of those blessed with fast feet! Simple game plan and so off we go, the early exchanges were ferocious, Wimborne capitalised and an early penalty provided MOYSEY with a kick for three points. Dennis applauded the decision and so 3 points, straight through the sticks. Next demonstrated how teamwork counts for everything, 'Ben and Ben incorporated' dealt with the perpertrator of a late tackle on scrum half MOYSEY. The forwards were showing how they planned to deal with the breakdown, hitting every contact area together and with speed, FULLER made his presence felt, strong at 'ruck time' and very progressive with ball in hand. COPLESTON and ASHMORE were also taking the ball in hand making excellent ground. COOK and MILSTEAD were offering themselves up and were providing excellent links between forwards and backs. LAWES was hitting the contact area at pace and provided grief for the Swans scrum all day.

It was fast and furious, the opening try fell to MAIDMENT who had another exceptional game, a strong runner he proved a handful all day. MARCH took the second with a strong run through midfield the backs were delighting in the forwards success. Excellent quick hands across the back line saw QUINN in space on his right wing where he dived over in the corner.
The try of the game as declared by 'El Capitano' HOLMAN came next, the captain hugged the right touch line and after a series of rucks he took a pass, stumbled three feet then dived over, fortunately HOLMAN senior was close by and got the action photo. The only unimpressed player was MOYSEY as he was kindly given another touch line chance of a conversion! The only unimpressed Wimborne supporter was Dennis as all his hard work at line out moves wasn't used as after twenty two minutes the first line out took place! The same corner took a battering as QUINN, unaffected by a loss of blood to a nasty bruise to his neck dived over for a sceond, hat-trick on the cards? No chance says QUINN senior, 'please substitute him at half time!'

Swans were struggling to get their hands on the ball, when they did they were hit backwards in the tackle, they enjoyed most success through their strong running centres. after one such run MAIDMENT was left as the last line of defence, showing that attack is not all he could do, he hit the try saving tackle head on. COULTER loving the clean ball he was getting from 'quick hands MOYSEY', was providing excellent ball for the backs. MOYSEY off the back of a ruck saw an opportunity out wide and provided an excellent judged cross kick to winger KNIGHT, who accepted the chance and finished well. MORRIS entered the scorers list when he evaded a couple of tackles and ran in under the sticks. The last score of the half fell to the impressive FULLER who bull dozed through the defence to the delight of the travelling support.

Half time and a win declared to Wimborne. A superb first half performance and a much deserved victory. The second half got underway on a 'friendly' basis and to Swans credit not only did they agree to carry on, they enjoyed some success and scored three tries of their own. The two scores for Wimborne in the second half were provided by 'Mini Me MORRIS' and MAIDMENT.

Man of the match: Rob FULLER
Men of the match: The rest of you were also superb but only one is required to collect the shirts!
Todays 'lookalikes' are Dennis and his new found friend!

After the overnight heavy rain came blue skies and a breeze, soft under foot but good conditions for the 'running game.' Some of the travellers were excused for going into the home sides changing room, must have lost direction or planned on a return to the dark side! After a week of injury reports Wimborne were left with 22 out of 34 reporting for duty, this gave some an opportunity for some to shine and some a change of position. The 'alleged' match reporter was seen clutching a notepad which would surely add a bit of factual content to the report! But then again................................

'El Capitano' HOLMAN injured last week was rested and handed over the 'armband' to MORRIS, who was ably assisted on the day by MOYSEY junior. Such responsibility was taken on with great 'gusto' by MORRIS and there was a 'confirmed' sighting of him cleaning his boots in the RICHARDS sink prior to kick off.

The game got underway refereed by a very capable and qualified Mr O'HARA, though I will be sending him a new 'sinbin' stopwatch for Christmas. After a kick off straight into touch Wimborne showed early intentions with the backs stacking left then sending full back MAIDMENT down the exposed right wing. Only a despairing tackle prevented an early score. Good early link play by COOK, MILSTEAD and ASHMORE provided good continuity but they found themselves isolated and Bournemouth seemed to provide more numbers to the breakdown so winning the ball. MARCH was presented with an early morning welcome home as he was upended in a strong tackle by the Bournemouth mid-field, he soon returned to his feet, dusted himself down then provided the opening score. He took a short pass, hit a cracking running line then wrong footed three defenders to open the visitors account, tackle that! MOYSEY ably assisted by linesman HURDLE senior curled the conversion somewhere near the posts!

The majority of play continued in the Bournemouth half, they were unable to kick themselves out of trouble into the strong breeze and on their brief excursions into Wimborne territory they were hit with a barrage of tackles. The back row of ASHMORE, RICHARDS and MILSTEAD were hitting everything that moved but 'Le Crunch' of the day was by MORRIS. MAIDMENT continues to impress and his man of the match performance included the next try, taking a pass in mid-field he hit a couple of side steps which allowed him to sprint in under the posts, no linesman required as MOYSEY slotted it through the sticks.

A sign of how these 'boys' are now 'young men' was provided by spectator COPLESTON who travelled to Chapelgate on his new moped, I understand his monthly petrol allowance is already spent as he keeps going the 'long way round.' He was welcomed to the game at one point when he was wiped out by FITCH and the Bournemouth winger, unfortunately he ended up in a muddy great mess!

MARCH continued his excellent finishing record and after a nicley timed pass from QUINN he scored the next try out wide on the left. After another strong MAIDMENT run, COULTER showed excellent invention with a cross-kick to winger QUINN, a despairing dive and slide but unfortunately just out of his reach. The last score of the half was made after another strong ASHMORE tackle, turn over ball followed by excellent handling across the back line saw FITCH in space out wide, evading the tackle he dived over in the corner. The half time score of 24 - 0 reflected the Wimborne possession and with 'fresh legs ' coming on, it was time to entertain the capacity crowd.

MORRIS showed excellent speed and went on a run, shouts of encouragement to pass were quite rightly ignored as he handed off a couple of defenders then ran in for the try, an excellent try but the best was yet to come. MAIDMENT who had impressed all day gathered in his own 22 and set off, after a couple of outrageous dummies, sidesteps he outpaced the despairing defence and ran in under the posts. Winger QUINN provided this weeks 'airshot' down the right wing, he made an excellent break and seemed to be away, no defenders within 10 meters he was sure to make the line. 'Safe hands QUINN', recently selected for the Dorset Under 17 Cricket squad unfortunately dropped the ball, knocked on and the chance was gone. Bournemouth enjoyed some forward possession during the second half and made good ground, they were recycling the ball well and delighted in some possession. MORRIS finished an excellent performance, leading by example he took advantage of the exhausted defence and handed off a couple of defenders to run in for his second try. Well it had to happen one day as they have been practising since September, the old MOYSEY to RICHARDS 'inside flick' saw RICHARDS through the defensive line, excellent break, only problem was it was executed on the half way line so too far to run but good entertainment for the travelling supporters! Bournemouth then enjoyed some possession mainly through their forwards and after a series of penalties a yellow card was issued, team offences so the 'ref' picked the biggest in the travellers side and sent him to the 'cooler.' The additional forward made all the difference and the home side deservedly got some points on the board.

Man of the match: MAIDMENT, excellent couple of tries, although only one tackle!

Thanks to: Travelling supporters including all those injured! Most relieved person: MOYSEY senior on return of his £10 deposit for the changing room key.

Big week this week guys, County Cup match this Sunday, training Wednesday night is essential!

With Leigh Park resembling a lake, the proposed fixture with Tottonians had to be postponed, speculative phone calls on a Friday evening found the only playable pitch in Hampshire. The response to our request for a lastminute.com fixture was accepted by Petersfield, as their coach said one of the four pitches they have would be fine! News broke of the change of venue and a few groans were heard but parents pulled together and transport was sorted for all who wished to play. Unbelievably QUINN and RICHARDS Senior were first to reach their 'destination', they did however retain their title as last to leave! Twenty one players made themselves available and so after a rain free warm up they took to the pitch, QUINN Senior aka 'Michael FISH' said, 'Earlier on today, apparently, a woman rung the BBC and said she heard there was a hurricane on the way... well, if you're watching, don't worry, there isn't!'

And so the storm began, hailstones and high winds but game on. The kick off was received by QUINN junior who kicked on three times but just failed to gather the ball, excellent ball skills and this lead to early pressure on the home side. Unable to clear with the high wind the opening exchanges were all in the home '22'. HOLMAN junior aka 'El Capitano' had to leave after 5 minutes after aggravating a shoulder/ back thingy, no magic water or sponge, so up stepped ASHMORE to take over front row duties. ASHMORE wearing a rather fetching headband put in an excellent performance and the prop postion caused him no problems.

The order and description of tries may be subject to 'poetic' licence, HOLMAN senior and his steamed up lens hasn't helped much this week! LAWES took over the front row try scoring duties after the loss of HOLMAN and bundled over from about three feet. FULLER had an impressive game particularly in the tackle where he hit a couple of cracking tackles on one of the home sides big forwards. MAIDMENT caused alot of damage to the home side, he had a cracking game at full back, in all he scored four tries, the best being a try from behind our own line in the sceond half which had been gathered well by KNIGHT, who beat a couple of tackles before releasing to MAIDMENT. ARNAOUTI on at half time enjoyed some ball and made some good defensive contributions either in the tackle or chasing back after the home side put boot to ball. Despite the dreadful conditions MOYSEY and his 'seven iron' were in excellent form, 5 out of seven on the day. MARCH continued his scoring spree and added another try. One try remains unaccounted for but the money is on COOK? Fortunately the referree blew the final whistle, thirty players plus subs and spectators cheered, the fastest 'Tunnel' was formed and we all legged it to the clubhouse. MILSTEAD a weekend visitor to the HOLMAN household had a forgetful day, no boots, no tie and then he had to borrow a shirt from HOLMAN senior!

Man of the match: ASHMORE, strong in the tackle, strong with ball in hand and earned my respect by covering the prop shirt! Best dressed man: MILSTEAD Thanks to: Petersfield for their hospitality and last minute arrangements

Sherborne 0- 43 Wimborne

The Wimborne Under 16 'roadtrip' continues, this time a trip to Sherborne, it had rained all week and torrential downpours on route surely threatened the game. RICHARDS senior decided to visit most villages in Dorset, most of which were covered in water and aptly named 'Piddle', 'Puddle' and 'Paddle'. Then the rain stopped, the sun came out and so game on!

A steady breeze favoured the travelling side in the first half, the early exchanges showed the Wimborne pack providing quick ball for the backs, each time the backs got ball they looked dangerous. MARCH was proving deadly on the wing, he made ground throughout the game, however the the first try was to fall to the forwards. Captain HOLMAN took the ball on from a maul ten metres from the line, after an excellent 'hit and spin' in the tackle he dived over, surely cameraman HOLMAN senior got a photo of this rare treat!

The game continued with Wimborne 'camped' in the Sherborne half, unable to kick to safety due to the wind the home side were struggling. Try of the game for me saw a short pop pass in midfield saw MAIDMENT hit the line at top speed, unstoppable he beat a static defence and went over an excellent try. The home side were to win some ball at the breakdown area, but were unable to use it successfully. The difference on the day was that each time Wimborne got running with ball in hand, they looked dangerous, MARCH continued down the right chasing kicks and pressurising the defence. The Sherborne half backs were being hassled and pressurised at the set pieces particularly by RICHARDS and MILSTEAD. ASHMORE was challenging well at the line out and disrupted the home team ball on a number of occasions.

Another three tries in the first half saw MORRIS dive over after a strong run, excellent running by KNIGHT took the winger wide so that MORRIS had the chance to cut back inside, ball in one hand and his bacon sandwich in the other, nothing like preparing yourself for a game! The next was provided by SCOBIE who hit the line at pace and beat the scrambling defence. KNIGHT also got onto the score sheet himself after an excellent pass from MOYSEY junior, who drew the defender well before putting the winger in the corner. After three succesful conversions from MOYSEY the half time score stood at 31 nil to the travellers. All these tries provided plenty of movement for MOYSEY senior, taking the kicking tee on with his fast moving feet, rumour has it that he will be joining 'Strictly' shortly after the sad demise of top athlete Jade Johnson, we wish him the very best of luck!

The introduction of subs saw COATES-WALKER enter the pitch, unfortunately after an excellent piece of support play he took a hefty tackle and went down heavily on his shoulder, only bruising but sadly it was the end of his rugby day. LEES continued a strong performance, linking well with the backs he featured heavily with his support play. BEST was also providing value for money, strong at the contact area and he enjoyed some ball in hand.

LAWES completed another brilliant day at the office, strong at scrum time and fierce at contact he is a developing into a formidable opponent!

ARNAOUTI awoke from his introduction to the game when he was hit with a crunching tackle, he covered across and made a try saving tackle on their prop, it showed everything important at the tackle area, technique, aggression and bottle!

MORRIS had finished his pointless conversations with the opposition mid-field and decided to go for a run, breaking tackles he made a great break before being chased under the posts by a member of the mid-field!

MILSTEAD finished off with a typical flankers try, charging down a defensive kick he then dived on the loose ball. I think he is enjoying his rugby!

The final whistle went and off to the clubhouse, most enjoyed numerous visits to the food counter, no wonder the pasta went so quick with COPLESTON and his four identical brothers in the queue! Still beats the eight pasties he had at Bath!

Men of the match: LEES and RICHARDS (MARCH also had an excellent game but only two are required to collect the shirts in!) '
Gaff' of the day: No air shots this week but a verbal 'gaff' from RICHARDS senior - Apologies to Mrs C!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Good news of the week: John and Edward actually tried to sing and so have left the show, they should have stuck with Lucy Jones! Not that I watch it of course!

Playing some excellent stuff at the moment, lets keep it going, please remember your parental consent forms on Wednesday for the Tottonians match! No form - no fame!

The chances of rugby this Sunday appeared remote judging by all that 'orrible wet stuff that was forecast and arrived! However off we went to Bridport and thankfully their stadium had the roof on all week and one pitch was playable, if you were a race horse you would have described the going as 'heavy.'

Billed all week as 'Return of the Rottweiller', MILSTEAD turned up nice and early, I understand he has missed the game and insisted on wearing his kit overnight just in case he was late, there is no truth in the rumour that he nearly choked on his gum shield whilst eating his breakfast! Joking aside it's good to see him back on the pitch. The late kick off due to pitch space was a blessing for some who managed to catch up on a bit of 'shut eye.' The subs took the approach of, 'If subs suits are available then we will wear them, even if we overheat in about 5 minutes.'The warm up was not without incident when CHILVERS took a COOK elbow straight on the 'hooter.'

The match got underway with Wimborne having the advantage of the slope, however the early exchanges can be best described as messy and Bridport seemed to be winning some ball particularly at the breakdown. The majority of the first quarter was spent in the Wimborne half, although when the backs were given ball they executed very well, the first quick ball ended up in the hands of MORRIS who went on a solo run and strongly fended off three defenders before heading for the sticks. (For those that don't know these are the posts!)
The second try followed after another period of pressure and territory from the home side, again the finishing was clinical, quick ball to COULTER and then an excellent long pass put MARCH in space, the 'pass of the day' for me followed which probably travelled only about 8 feet, taking the ball MARCH drew the defender before offloading to ARNAOUTI. The winger put in space backed his pace and took the defender on the outside, one 'tasty' hand off later and he was away, finishing it off for a well taken score. Two successful conversions by MOYSEY and at half time the score sat at 14-0 to the visitors, the half time 'chat' centered on the need of winning the ball at the contact area and releasing quick ball for the backs who were looking dangerous when given space.

MAIDMENT let loose at half time was causing havoc for the defence, dummies, sidesteps and strong running, the pink boots were causing chaos. He scored the first of his two tries after one of his many excellent runs. The line out started to win possession through debutant MILTON and RICHARDS. COPLESTON adorning a rather fetching scrum cap started to hit the break down area, joined by LAWES, Wimborne started to take the game by the scruff of the neck. An early chance fell to QUINN (Good to see him back!) on the left wing who dived for the corner, 'Touchdown' or maybe not as the replay showed dropped in the tackle so no try! Still not to worry because a few minutes later and QUINN ('I will be at training on Wednesday') again found himself some space after quick hands from the backs and he rode the tackle to take a well earned try. MILTON also featured at the start of a good passage of play where he combined with MILSTEAD who then offloaded to BEST who galloped towards the line, an excellent cover tackle stopped his progress and the big man fell at 'Bechers Brook.' Wimborne were now dominating every part of the game, the fresh Wimborne legs at half time and the tired legs of the home side had made the difference. The home side started taking a few injuries so COOK and CHILVERS kindly joined the opposition.
MAIDMENT scored after another excellent solo effort. MILSTEAD was also making in roads and after a mazy run unfortunately he knocked on and headed back for the scrum, MORRIS also scored a second try in typical fashion, carrying a couple of tacklers over the line with him. Bridport determined to put some points on the board with a well taken penalty but Wimborne finished in style when BEST offering excellent support took the pass and bundled over to finish it off. QUINN continued MOYSEYS 100% success with conversions and the match ended.

Men of the match: CHILVERS and COOK after their offer to help Bridport
Bizarre event of the day: No air shots this week but we did have MILSTEAD diving into touch for no apparent reason, when asked about it, he pointed out that he didn't know what to do so he took a dive, obviously been watching too much Premiership football in his convalescence!
Love is: MORRIS and BEWLEY asleep in the back of the car on the way back!

Some cracking rugby today guys lets keep the momentum going!

Much awaited and thought about, a little bit like the match report! Arriving nice and early you could sense that the travellers were ready to do battle, having not won at Dorchester for two seasons and up against last seasons finalists it promised to be a physical contest. An early win in a previous fixture this season gave Wimborne the favourite card but an away tie at Dorchester is never going to be easy.

Captain HOLMAN showed a determined face on his arrival and inspired his troops with 'polite' pre-match conversation. No allocated referree was a bit of a disappointment but thanks to a Dorchester U15 qualified ref we were able to get the match underway. The match got underway and early Wimborne possession via the forwards resulted in early supremacy and territory, the backs were looking great but the final pass was drifting on the wind. the tackling in mid-field from COULTER and SCOBIE who had both recently joined up to www. tackleaminute.com was causing great problems for the home side. FITCH started well with a cracking tackle, it was almost as if he was trying to show someone that he was blessed with a defensive game as well as being a prolific finisher. The first score was from MOYSEY who took the ball from the back of a scrum, watched him play since he was six and just had a feeling that there was going to be an outrageous side step, dummy then dive over the line. First points on the board and a successful conversion of his own try, surely this would settle the nerves.

The forwards were engaing in a very physical battle, the set pieces were going well but the Dorchester defensive line were holding up very well. The next score went to MORRIS who completed a strong run, evading the despairing tackles he dived over. Another successful conversion and Wimborne were starting to show points for their periods of possession. 'Leaping Salmon' Fitch later renamed 'Pretty Boy' by a spectator was felled as he leapt for the ball. The Dorchester player ran to meet him and I believe unintentionally took the player out in the air. A yellow card for the Dorchester player and FITCH got to his feet. An excellent decison from Captain HOLMAN saw an election for posts and MOYSEY promptly accepted and added another three points. Just when we thought we had the upper hand with five minutes to half time, a couple of missed tackles and a strong run from the impressive Dorchester No 9 saw Dorchester get some points on the board.

Half time came 17-5 to the visitors and time to focus, start the second half with the same determination as the first and make best use of the one man advantage. Dorchester were having none of it and showed that they were up for the fight. SCOBIE made a try saving tackle by diving full length and felled their flying winger with an ankle tap. Wimborne seemed to weather the storm and strangely played better when Dorchester regrouped to 15! MOYSEY was still causing the home side problems and quick ball was being used excellently by the Wimborne backs. Time after time they bravely ran it out of defence sometimes from their own line, risky stuff but probably the best option into the wind. FITCH inspired by the earlier touchline 'comments' made the decisive breakthrough, it had everything, speed, agility, intelligence and strength of character, everything that left the touchline motivator some years ago!

The forwards lead by Captain HOLMAN were making all their tackles, they needed to because Dorchester to their credit never gave up. The scrum started to provide good possession for MOYSEY who was taking some hefty hits, some called them late and some didn't but funnily enough he got up and cracked on. Dorchester were to score after a FITCH air shot, obviously heard about MAIDMENTS mishap against Bath! Wimborne made few breaks from deep and passing in the back line was looking crisp, MORRIS capitalised with another score. Again Dorchester fight back and scored another try, it all got a bit confused after that as the match reporter entered into a deep meaningful discussion! But I certainly saw Wimborne score through MAIDMENT in the far corner.

The match ended with Wimborne the victors and a tie with Swans in the next round, Dorchester had to their credit given it everything and without a league structure in our county unlike every other County in the South of England this was the end of their County Cup for this season.

Man of the Match: All of you!
Good to see: Quinn Senior, now you guys just need to work on Quinn Junior!
Special thanks to: The travelling subs that didnt get on the pitch but its great to hear good reports from the Colts Coaches.

Happy days but be warned its only just begun!

Bath 14 - 15 Wimborne

The weather forecast had looked horrible all week and unlike the weather forecasts of old it was spot on! Torrential rain, high winds, fallen trees and 'Sat Naff' trouble for some meant a difficult journey to Bath. Despite the desire of the drivers not to drive up that narrow 1:2 hill, 'Sat Naff' was having none of it and most made the steep climb!
COOK had arrived in Bath in good time despite the conditions but then headed off to Bristol? He arrived a 'tad' late so was relegated to bench duty, the day got better for him though! BEST had car sickness which was later explained by the previous evenings excesses!
Whilst the rain had stopped, the gale force wind had not, though the pitches were in excellent condition. We took to the field then realised that the cross bar had not survived the wind so we marched off to find another pitch, if life was only that easy at home!

Anyway to the match, we have enjoyed close encounters with Bath right through youth rugby and this was to also provide a thrilling finish. The match started with Wimborne playing into the strong wind, from the kick off the majority of ball belonged to Wimborne, good lineout work by FULLER gained valuable possession. The Bath pack certainly wanted to compete at the break down and one Bath forward renewed his close friendships with the travellers and was individually penalised three times in the first ten minutes, the latter of his infringements resulted in him being sent to the 'cooler' for use of the elbow in contact. MARCH had taken the blow but as ever 'dusted' himself down and returned to the fray.
The Wimborne pack was proving a productive unit and whilst plenty of ball was being provided, the wind was hampering the backs, Wimborne found themselves camped near to the Bath line for a long period, though excellent defensive work by the home side kept the travellers at bay. Captain HOLMAN took a quick penalty and probably wished he hadn't as he hit a road block about one meter from the line. The Bath midfield was proving difficult to breach despite the strong running of COULTER, MORRIS and MARCH. KNIGHT sporting his new 'hair do' made a couple of strong runs down the wing before setting the ball up well. MORRIS and COULTER were having to take more contact than they wished not wanting to throw trouble out wide.
Bath were to score after a period of possession and half time approached with the score at 7-0, it was a competitive first half and Wimborne nearly levelled it after an excellent breakout by flanker COPLESTON which nearly cut through the defence, it made us good ground before MAIDMENT released the ball to LAWES for another strong forward run.
Half time came with the Bath lead intact, everything to play for and now a test of how Wimborne would use the wind. 'Phileas Fogg' COOK joined the fray and showed a good sense of direction mainly forward towards 'Bristol'. MOYSEY selected his pitching wedge and made us excellent ground by deftly kicking to the far corner, safe in the knowledge of the Wimborne success at the line out. PAYNE and ARNAOUTI enjoyed some ball on the wing but the Bath defence held firm. Captain HOLMAN nominated posts after a Bath infringement (apparenty got a nod from vice-captain MORRIS). MOYSEY elected the sand wedge and slapped it through for a three pointer. Game on or so we thought!
After a series of missed tackles Bath broke out of the Wimborne hold and after a very ropey 'crossfield kick' the ball bounced into Bath hands much to the disgust of full back MAIDMENT. On a better day 'Scottie very hottie' would have gathered and run one in but it was not to be. A 'successful' conversion attempt, well it went somewhere near the posts and the home side lead 14 - 3.
Eight minutes left so game over? From the kick off COULTER elected his driving iron and slapped it, back spin was unsuccessful so scrum back, game definitely over as Wimborne success at scrum time had been nullified as uncontested scrums were the order of the day after an injury to the Bath prop. Time to dig deep and thats exactly what happened, MAIDMENT inspired and threatened with no lunch by his touch line family started to play a heavy influence in the game, one break down the touch line showed excellent skill and was capped off with a bizarre 'air shot.' He will be delighted that I have a photograph of the 'mis-kick.' A good lineout steal and juggle from RICHARDS, the visitors seemed to be enjoying more possession and upped the 'tempo'. Another MAIDMENT break and last ditch tackle, a scrum near the line, uncontested scrum so my bet is FULLER pick up from 8, 'get nice and low' with words of wisdom from MOYSEY and then crash over. Try time! Excellent MOYSEY pitch through the sticks, getting there, 14 -10, three minutes left?
We haven't finished yet and just to brighten up his day 'Nomad' COOK found the try line from close range and dived over for the winning score. Never in doubt! An excellent game to watch and superb skills from both sides in the horrendous conditions.

Man of the Match: Rob Fuller (excellent display from the 'big man', getting lower in contact is the key!)
Best dressed supporter: Matt Milstead
Player giving most needless penalties away, which was probably the difference between victory and loss?: To be discussed on Wednesday!
Words of wisdom: 'Never give up 'til the fight is done!'

Happy days

We decided to add a new experience in our last year of youth rugby and accepted the kind offer of an early season overseas tour! The extra hour in bed was not accepted in some households as some players decided that team bonding was more enjoyable, though I see no enjoyment in squeezing somebody elses spots! Anyway lets move quickly on!

The planned ferry at 09:25 would allow some to catch up with breakfast, which normally means a bacon roll or croissant, prop LEES decided on a large chocolate muffin! The 'mini' fun bus arrived, courtesy and thanks to Alan BURBIDGE. The trip across was excellent, though the breeze was a sign of things to come. A hastily organised convoy on the other side of 'The Channel' and we were off to find the ground, 'Sat naff' said left at one point but Mrs 'R' said 'No' so after a short discussion we went as ordered. The 'Sat Naff', driver and three passengers were suitably disciplined and we progressed!

Arrival at the ground and a promise of difficult conditions, blue sky, a strong wind and a well drained sloping pitch. Everybody had survived the trip so we took to the field. Vectis riding high as leaders in Hampshire Division 1 were unfortunately missing some key players, particularly in the scrum, which was to greatly influence the game. From the kick off Wimborne took early control, the forwards took early possession and after a short period of 'white line fever', the ball was eventually thrown to FITCH on the right wing who gathered very well to take the first try. 'SKY SPORTS' replays definitely showed that if the forwards had released the ball earlier the four man overlap would have been an easier option!

Captain HOLMAN was having early success at scrum time, taking two early strikes against the head. Unfortunately Vectis due to injury and their absentees could no longer contest at the scrum, uncontested always tends to disrupt the flow of the game, though England could well be doing this come the Autumn Internationals! HOLMAN recovering from 'jetlag' was a 'tad' annoyed. However Wimborne continued to enjoy plenty of possession mainly due to excellent work by the forwards, body positions were excellent in the maul and it seemed if they couldn't have contested scrums then they would trundle a maul 30 meters upfield. FITCH continued to enjoy the possession and caused 'havoc' wherever he popped up. COULTER, MORRIS and MARCH were making all their tackles in midfield and were pressing the defence into handling errors. ARNAOUTI on the wing and at the bottom of the hill made an excellent catch and set off up the incline, hitting contact he set the ball up well. FULLER was unlucky not to score in the corner after being robbed by the touch line.

After a strong MORRIS run where after heavy contact and artillery he came up with the ball before playing 'pass the parcel' with FITCH who accepted the gift and ran in for another score. Another try after elusive running in the backs saw COULTER feed the ball to MARCH who dived over for another score.

Half time came and went, harsh words from RICHARDS senior who had heard enough bickering on the pitch to last the season, it was like listening to the 'Strictly judges.' After some fresh legs at half time and a slurp of magic water we started as we wanted to, excellent use of the ball in the backs saw MORRIS execute a superbly timed pass which saw 'Early Ferry FITCH' in for another cracking try. MORRIS scored twice in the second half proving a difficult man to bring down. Vectis proved more successful in the second half and but for one of ASHMORES many excellent tackles they would have enjoyed an early score. PAYNE introduced at half time made his tackles down the wing and made a couple of strong runs into a determined home defence.

Vectis showed good determination particularly from their No 4 and 6 who both made a series of strong runs, they were to be rewarded with two converted tries. MAIDMENT moved from 15 to 6 to 10 in the space of five minutes took over from COULTER who was nursing sore stomach muscles (apparently teacher thought it would be fun to do a sit up bleep test?). COULTER had played well kicking particularly well and sensibly in the first half. MOYSEY continued to provide quick service from the break down despite the attentions of the Vectis 'makeshift 9', who had started on the flank. Quick ball to MAIDMENT and a deceptive run saw the ball to FITCH to score in the corner.

An excellent day out and we progress despite some difficult conditions!

Man of the match: Ant FITCH, excellent finishing.
Grumpiest tourist: Lots of nominations received, Winner to be discussed Wednesday but I know who my money is on!
Best dressed Player: LAWES and his 'Boating shoes'

Happy days, we march on!

Summer remains in Wimborne which is great for running rugby, a few bleary eyed coaches arrived after celebrating the Dennis FRY 50th party! Congrats from the boys and I can verify that he played yesterday for the mighty 'Wimborne Thirds' at the ripe old age of an 'old man'.

Anyway back to Youth rugby, this was always going to be a physical battle and to be honest both teams are probably delighted that it was a competitive hard fought contest at this stage in the season. There was the usual loud banter from the side line particularly at the referee which I thought was unfounded as I thought he had a good game.

The Wimborne pack started well especially at the line out with RICHARDS and FULLER taking their own and opposition line-out, though lets face it they can't go flying without the hard work of LEES, LAWES, ASHMORE and COOK, they continued to take ball excellently throughout the game. The scrum was evenly contested which provided for periods of equal possession. FULLER opened up the scoring with a strong run to the corner, which his parents missed by about 2 minutes, so for their benefit, he broke from our twenty two, he chipped one defender before gathering the ball then with a rather extravagant cartwheel and somersault he outpaced twelve defenders and dived over in the corner (or something like that!).

Tackling was fierce from both teams, KNIGHT of Wimborne stuck in a couple of big hits and an early cover tackle from MORRIS certainly saved an away team score. The next score was excellently finished by FITCH who beat the defence much to the delight of the home crowd. Dorchester were to show their strength at close quarters and through a period of 'pick and go' from the forwards they were rewarded with a score of their own. They were to score a second after a strong passage of play, a couple of missed tackles by a flailing Wimborne defence and they scored in the corner. Half time came and the score reflected the hard battle 10 -10 and the eagerly awaited second half to come.

The second half saw a period of Wimborne domination, camped in the Dorchester half they continued to win both lineout and scrum ball, however Dorchester thrived on the loose ball which kept them in the game. The Wimborne backs particularly MOYSEY started to use the boot well in the second half pegging Dorchester back and good chases by FITCH and MAIDMENT put the defence in trouble. MAIDMENT, replacement at half time for the injured KNIGHT brought with him 'pink dancing boots', one of his excellent runs included three twirls, two spins and a 'catchev', dancing champion MOYSEY Senior looked very envious. MOYSEY junior enjoyed a bit of his own 'quickstep' when he finished off a well taken try in the corner.

The Wimborne pack were winning good ball and feeding the backs, FULLER was making some big hits and making excellent ground in the loose, certainly his best game of the season. The backs thrived with loads of ball and but for a good defensive effort by Dorchester the possession could have resulted in more tries. HURDLE felt he had scored after a strong run for the line but was deemed held up. FITCH was to score after an excellent jinking run where he beat three defenders. A successful conversion by MOYSEY saw the ball up a tree much to the discontent of the coaching team! Wimborne continued to dominate and continued to spend the vast majority of the second half camped in the 'right half of the pitch.' The final try from man of the match COULTER showed everything the coaching staff used to be able to do, honest! Twenty meters from the line, no one to safely pass to, so he backed himself to hit the gap before beating three defenders and diving over for an excellent solo effort. MOYSEY junior then delighted the coaching staff by hitting the post and not sticking another one up the tree! Dorchester kept going until the end and but for a try saving Quinn junior tackle they would have surely scored the final try.

LAWES and COOK are worthy of mention, both won crucial ball at ruck time which took possession away from the travelling team. On the whole guys an excellent performance, tackling was much improved, lineout awesome, scrum evenly matched, backs excellent defensively particularly in mid-field by hard hitting MORRIS and MARCH. We are proud you stuck together in times of trouble!

Man of the match: Joe Coulter (I told you it would finally click, now lets go for it!)
Thanks to: An injured and very frustrated MILSTEAD who ran the line.

Happy days, you were awesome today!

Oakmeadians 32 - 57 Wimborne

Nick's photos

Another sunny day for rugby and a short trip across to Meyrick Park, turning up in plenty of time (well not everybody!) and affter a good warm up Wimborne took to the field then promptly conceded the first try after a few minutes.
As you can see from the score tries were going to be plentiful for both teams. MORRIS on the left wing got Wimborne back into the game with some strong runs, using his speed and a couple of very tasty hand offs he was unstoppable. The forwards were providing some quick ball for the backs but were prevented from making ground after a series of penalties and other infringements. The Oaks pack were having a good day and took their fair share of ball, Wimborne were a bit disappointing at the tackle area on a number of occasions which allowed the home team another try after a scrum near the line. Despite this Wimborne kept the scoreboard ticking over through a great individual effort from SCOBIE which saw him beat a couple of defenders before making his way under the posts. MOYSEY and COULTER kept the ball moving well, aiming to get the ball fast and wide to MORRIS who was having his best game of the season, he was strong in attack and caused problems for the Oaks defence.
The Wimborne forwards were having a good day in the lineout, FULLER started to take some opposition ball before he left the field due to a spillage of 'Claret.' The spillage of red stuff may be down to the high altitude that he finds himself at with LAWES and BEST launching him up.

The half time sub changes were made and the strength in depth was for all to see, even if we had 14 players on the pitch on two occasions!
The introduction of 'birthday boy' MARCH seemed to add a bit in midfield and one break saw SCOBIE taking a well timed pass from MARCH before he danced his way up field. The half time restructure of the back line saw FITCH move to the wing and he seemed to enjoy the extra space and especially enjoyed the kick and chase used by MOYSEY and QUINN.
Oaks were kept in the game by their forwards who kept winning ball and making good ground. LAWES and BEST after a 'little rest' added a bit of 'go forward' and so released some quick ball for the Wimborne backs. MARCH was not finished for the day, competing well in midfieild at the tackle area, he then went on strong run beating defenders before running one in under the posts.

All in all, Wimborne had shown some good improvements from last week especially at the ruck area and the line out, tackling was a little disappointing but on the whole a good day at the office despite your frustrations which we will discuss on Wednesday!

Man of the match: Jack Cook (like every good No 6, he quietly goes about his business!)

A home fixture to Swans at the rapidly improving clubhouse, again Summer was here and everybody was asking for rain to soften up the pitches, its a funny old world!

Wimborne took to the pitch sporting their new kit much to the delight of the 'Sponsors.'
The match got under way with a 'banana' kick from Swans which Captain HOLMAN latched onto and fly hacked on, in an Andy GOODE kind of way. Early Wimborne pressure saw the majority of play in the Swans half but the home side failed to convert pressure to points. The Swans forwards who collectively played well at the ruck area slowed down the ball well and the game developed into a forward battle. Slow ball was clearly frustrating the Wimborne back line who became too flat in attack and passes failed to hit their targets. Some days these things happen!
Copleston opened up the scoring with a strong run from the back of a ruck powering to the line. The next score was a while coming but the ball broke to Coulter in midfield who run towards space and the winger March, an excellently timed pass saw March racing to the corned evading the despairing tackles of the Swans defence. Half time changes were made and the Wimborne side soon started to take control, realising 'quick ball ' was the answer the backs started to enjoy more ball. The line out was performing well and we started to win some scrum ball, Fitch scored after a strong run and started to pose a threat in open play. Coulter scored after an excellent run from Knight who side stepped his way to the line before a well timed off load.
The Wimborne team started to take control and a well worked try saw Scobie diving over. Quinn also took his chance well diving over in the corner. The Swans team never gave up hope and scored a try of their own off the back of a scrum close to the Wimborne line.

All in all and I'm sure the Wimborne players will agree, we can and will play better. We need to establish a game plan and not play to the oppositions!

North Dorset 31 Wimborne 26
Second game of the season and off we travelled to North Dorset, it was going to be a big test against the Champions of Dorset and Wilts for the last three seasons.
On arrival we were greeted with blue skies, no rain and the usual friendly banter. Just as well we have a big squad as it was the final final final Dorset and Wilts Trial so we were again somewhat depleted. Still when you turn up and you are one of fifteen players you know you are going to get a full match!

Wimborne seemed up for a battle and took to the pitch wearing their new shirts kindly sponsored by S.B.P. (Sponsored By Parents). Both teams entertained the crowd with attacking rugby from all parts of the pitch, it truly was a great game and at half time seemed equally matched with the score at 12 - 7 to the home side.
After the half time break North Dorset started to dominate, took their chances very well and took a comprehensive lead racking up a few tries. To Wimbornes credit they refused to give up and mounted a come back but in the end ran out of steam. A quick check of the score board showed the result as North Dorset 31 Wimborne 26. A truly excellent game, played in good spirit by both teams.
Men of the match: Fifteen young men who battled 'til the end!

Looking to start the season with a competitive game we travelled to Winchester to face the Champions of Hampshire for the last three seasons. Unfortunately it was trials day in Dorset and Wilts so the squad was somewhat depleted! However those that played on the day can hold their heads high, tackling was excellent until we ran out of steam. Winchester were a well drilled side and were also missing some players due to their County trials but seemed still to have strength in depth. The end result was a clear victory to Winchester who played some impressive stuff particularly through some of their strong forwards. Men of the match: Matt Arnaouti and a 'bashed up' George Payne'

Welcome to the 2009-2010 Season
Dear Parents, Players/Guardians
The Summer has gone and we enter the last season of Youth rugby, let's make it as enjoyable as the previous years. Please find below some information about the forthcoming season, it will greatly benefit us all if you, read, digest and plan ahead.

Last Season A brief summary of an excellent 2008-2009 season: Played 21 Won 17 Draw 1 Lost 3 Unbeaten at home all season! A squad of 33 players!
Dorset & Wilts County Trials Season 2009-2010 Rob FULLER, Tom MOYSEY and Antony FITCH all represented the D & W last season, they will be joined by three nominations by the coaches. In addition some players have been entered via their schools, I wish you all the best.
Squad numbers and Selection Policy We anticipate that the squad will be at a minimum of 30 this season and could be as many as 35. Clearly the aims of the coaches are for all players to enjoy their rugby, be competitive and develop skills for life. All players will be considered for selection on current form. Past awards are important but everybody must earn their place on current playing ability, attendance and commitment. It will not be practicable to take the whole squad to away fixtures or turn up on mass for home fixtures. The squad for each game will be selected by ALL the coaches, approximately 20-22 players will be selected to play. Those not selected will be advised if there is a Sunday training session which will depend on numbers or they will be welcomed as supporters. Some fixtures will be targeted with the strongest squad available; this has to be done so that the coaches can assess our current standard. The County Cup Matches will be targeted with the strongest available squad. In addition to this some fixtures will be targeted with the strongest squad, particularly against strong opposition or as a warm up prior to a County fixtures. All players will be given ample opportunities to play in matches but if players or parents have concerns over non selection I ask that you speak to the coaches direct. It would greatly assist if any future unavailability is notified as soon as possible to Dave. Players will be notified of their selection by the coaches, if no contact is made then it must be assumed that the player is not selected. Any queries must be made by contact with Dave. In addition we may be requested to assist the Colts age group, this will be dealt with on a match by match basis dependent if they have shortages and will be discussed with players and parents as the needs arise.
Midweek Training This will be every Wednesday evening, the importance of this training is vastly increased this season, though it is accepted that some commitments may restrict attendance. However it would greatly assist if all efforts are made to attend as this is our chance to develop moves, skills and learn from the previous Sunday match. Please remember we train in Wimborne tops!
Fixtures As mentioned above players will be notified on selection, those selected will be expected to be prompt and turn up with all the necessary kit particularly if its wet. After match there will be a shirt and tie worn, preferably a white shirt and a club tie, there will be no exceptions to this rule! It is essential that players and parents regularly check the Wimborne web site which provides the most accurate and up to date list of fixtures. It is no good us planning ahead as coaches with selections only to discover that players are unavailable due to holidays or other commitments so please bear this in mind!
Parental Help Thank you to those that assisted in anyway last year in whatever capacity. If you assisted in no capacity please spare some time if you can! Don’t let it be the same old faces!
Parental Support Support from the touchline is actively encouraged but we ask it is fair, constructive and within reason. If I am on the other side of the pitch and I can hear you I feel you can probably rest your vocal chords, in the heat of battle players won’t hear you anyway! The coaches also ask that any advice to players during play is by the coaches, players get somewhat confused by sometimes differing advice, however well intentioned.
Important - Proposed Tour 2010 During the Summer months Paula has spent some time working on a suitable location bearing in mind the current financial climate. In order to book a place a non-refundable deposit of £75 is required ASAP and by 20th September at the very latest. The balance will be requested after Xmas but if you wish to pay on a gradual basis during the season then please speak to Paula.

All the very best for the season, we can have a very successful and enjoyable season if we all give commitment and enthusiasm to everything we do!
