On a cloudy but dry day we set off for what is always one of the coldest Rugby clubs in the area, all wrapped up with fleeces and hoodies over our Rugby kit. The Under 7's at Wimborne have proved to be so popular this season that we are able to provide 2 squads of 12 over 6's - the Wimborne Knights and the Wimborne Warriors, names suggested by one of our children.

The Knights played 4 matches in their pool, the first of which was against Winchester. For parents and coaches alike there was a great display of tagging, followed by some wonderful defensive play in the second half. The ball moved quickly from end to end, with the Knights scoring 4 tries, and we were proud to come away with a 7-7 draw.
Onto the next match, this time against Chippenham, a team we had mixed fortunes with last season. Drafting in new squad players for this match proved a wise decision, as we ran in 4 tries to their 3 in a fast flowing, attacking match.
The Knights then met the U7 side from North Dorset in a thriller of a match. This was a far more technical affair, reflected in a 3-3 draw at the end, but still there were plenty of individual performances to praise.
Finally, the home side (A) stepped onto the pitch. The Knights, in spite of being pretty tired by this point, stepped up their game, but were unable to convert for a draw, eventually conceding 3-5.
Good news was on its' way, as we heard that we had done enough to progress to the final round.
The children pulled out all the stops, with some wonderful tries and running, and justifiably came away with the Plate for 3rd place on a 6-1 victory.

The Wimborne Warriors may be younger, but they more than made up for their lack of tournament experience with sheer guts and enthusiasm. They played three matches in their pool, against Salisbury (B), Bath and Havant.
Against Salisbury (B), they gave us a great display of tagging and defensive play, keeping discipline in the line out, and listening well to the two older boys put in the squad as mentors. They came away with a 2-2 draw, but that did not reflect the amount of possession the team had in the match.
Next up was Bath, a formidable team. Cheered on by the large numbers of parents and friends watching, the boys and girls clung onto a 1-1 draw.
Finally, the Warriors played the Havant side. Some great running from one of the youngest players, and some fantastic tagging in front of the try line was not enough to ensure victory however, and Havant squeezed through a 1-2 win.

All children played brilliantly, and thoroughly deserved their certificates of achievement.
With such a great squad of children, and such supportive parents, the future of Wimborne Rugby looks very rosy indeed.

WRFC Under 7's Notices Sunday 11 October 2009
This week sees us training all together once more; hopefully under sunnier skies than we have seen of late! As the weather is probably on the turn for Autumn, you are probably all thinking of wet weather clothing for your children. So it's undoubtedly a good moment to let you know that, as part of your joining WRFC, your child can collect a waterproof jacket, in black and green with the WRFC logo on the front. Although there is not an enormous choice of sizes, they are generously cut, so please don't hesitate to let us know if you would like one.

On the subject of clothing, some of you may be interested in purchasing a 'skin' for your child. These polo necked tops are specially designed to be worn under club tops, and are made of breathable material, so they keep you nice and toasty! Rick Nisi has kindly offered to order these items for us, which means we will get a discount, so if you are interested, please add your name to our list.

The Prezzo evening has been booked - 28th November at 7.30pm (please note the revised time). If you haven't yet confirmed your attendance, don't worry - you still have a week or so!

And another date for your diary is Friday 18th December, which is the WRFC's Christmas Party. By then the clubhouse will be completely refurbished, so please come along and celebrate the end of the school term/beginning of the holidays/Christmas/anything! There are 120 tickets available from Rob Dustan in the Clubhouse, priced £10 each, which covers the cost of a buffet, music and the obligatory good time!

So, we turn our attention towards preparing for the next tournament, which is in Salisbury at the end of the month. We are taking 2 teams (please let us know your suggestions for names), but unfortunately are not allowed, under RFU rules, to include any child who has not yet reached the grand age of 6. Team lists will be published next week through the notices, and then will be confirmed in person by the Head Coach.

And finally, saving the best til last, a match report from the New Milton tournament. Our squad of 13 children, some of whom are in their first season of Rugby, did themselves proud, battling through to the Semi-Finals, only to be denied a place in the Final on tries scored. The commitment shown by the children, parents and coaches was amazing, so we thank you all so much for giving up your Sunday, whether at New Milton or Wimborne - we have now got 30 children registered with the U7's, which has to be a record - and what a great squad of players to take forward!

If there is anything at all we can help you with, please don't hesitate to ask either of us.
With best wishes, Ruth and Eleanor

New Milton Tournament Report
Sunday October 4th 2009

Team List:
Tomas, Toby, Lily, Will, William, Freddie, Max, Daniel, Ty, James, Lucy, Luke, Sam

On a cool day with rain in the air, we all met at New Milton Rugby Club at 9.30. Amazed by the sheer size of the grounds and the numbers of participating teams, it took a little while to find our location, but eventually we all set up camp near to the loos, next to the food tent and in front of the playpark - thus pleasing everyone!
We played three matches in our pool against New Milton II, Ellingham & Ringwood and Fordingbridge, Bournemouth having withdrawn earlier that day.

The first game saw us off to a flying start, with winning tries from Freddie, James, Luke and Lucy, great tagging from Will and some amazing running from Max. What a confidence boost to our Under 7's when we heard the final whistle blow on a score of 4-2!

After a short break, we played against Ellingham & Ringwood, a traditionally very strong side. With great play from Toby, Tomas and William and fantastic running from Lily, we rose to the challenge. But even three outstanding tries from Sam, Luke and Daniel were sadly not enough to secure victory, and we came away with a 3-5 scoreline. It then seemed an age before we played again, so lots of games and practice with parents filled the gap.

Then it was Wimborne v. Fordingbridge to establish our position in the group. Poor Fordingbridge didn't really have a chance to get into the game, as we ran in 8 tries from Sam, Luke, Tomas, Will and Lucy. Everything came together for this match, with well-timed tagging from Will, sprints from one end of the pitch to the other from Lucy and amazing team work from Ty and the rest of the squad, either playing or cheering from the sidelines. With a final score of 8-3, we were delighted to then go through to the Semi-Finals, where we met the (on paper) strongest side in the Tournament, New Milton I.

The children forgot about being tired in the excitement of the game - so thrilling that the U8's all came to watch! The pressure was constant, but we did not give in, showing some great defensive work, tagging and passing. Lucy in particular rose to the challenge, but the team's effort and determination was faultless. The tries crept forward for both teams, but at the final whistle, we had battled through to a 5-5 draw. This put us in the frame for Finalists, but luck was not on our side, as New Milton I went through on number of tries scored.
We had a great day of Rugby, and the children were all presented with a Certificate of Achievement - the first of many this season no doubt.
Thanks go to all the parents and coaches for their input, and of course to the children whose enthusiasm and commitment were extremely impressive.
